Ted Talk on “The Hidden Reason for poverty the world needs to address now”
Summary
In the
beginning of the Ted Talk, Gary Haugen talks about how he was talking care of
police abuse cases until 1994, when he was sent to Rwanda to be the director of
the U.N.’s genocide investigation. He thinks that the Rwanda genocide was one
of the world’s greatest failures of simple compassion (Compassion is made from
two words in Latin, Cum Passion which means to suffer with). He was also part
of the greatest success of compassion which is the fight against Global
Poverty. One of his most Jarring experiences was with Venus who is a mom from
Zambia. She has 3 kids and she is a widow.
When he met
her she had walked about 12 miles so she could go the Capital city so she can
tell her story. Venus talked with Gary for hours, telling him how she
experienced poverty. She had to watch her youngest son suffer from
malnutrition. To Gary, the fight against global poverty is the broadest,
longest running manifestation of the human phenomenon of compassion in the
history of our species. When Gary was graduating high school, they told him
thirty five years ago that 40,000 children die because of poverty. But now,
that number has dropped to about to 17,000 children.
His point
is that every year, Eight million kids don’t have to die from poverty. The
people that live in extreme poverty ($1.25) 35 years ago was 50%, but now is
15%. But 2 Billion people that only made $1.25 now only make $2.00. Now going
back to Venus, she said that she was fine, until her husband died, and Brutus
through them out of their house and stole their land. He says that none of
those traditional antipoverty programs could stop Brutus because they weren’t
meant to get rid of him. Gary goes on and starts to talk about another girl he
met whose name is Griselda and she lives in Guatemala.
When he
first met her she noticed that she wasn’t going to school at all and she was
barely leaving her home. Days before they met her when she was walking home
from church, men out of nowhere snatched her and raped her. She had every
opportunity to go to school, but it wasn’t safe for her to get there. Any
anti-poverty programs cannot save slaves from being in poverty, and that’s the
downfall of them. Poverty has to be fixed so this problem can be solved.
My Opinion
I think
that it is horrible that Antipoverty programs can’t fix this problem that they
overlook it. I like the Antipoverty programs but I hate how they overlook
issues such as dragging people out of their houses which causes them to be in
poverty or people being dragged into slavery which causes them to be in
poverty. I really hope that those programs while watch this Ted talk and try to
fix what and how they support poverty.
But, I’m still glad that the numbers have started to drop for how many
children died in poverty but I still feel really bad for them. This concluded
my opinion.

Jewish
Perspective Essay
1 1.)DEUTERONOMY
10:18-19
-
[God] upholds the cause of
the orphan and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing him/her with
food and clothing. -- You too must befriend the stranger, for you were
strangers in the land of Egypt.
This
Text means that you should always try to help strangers/the people in poverty.
It also means that you should go out of your way to give them food and clothes.
This mostly goes toward Widows and Orphans because they had no one to depend
to, and they all needed help in one way or another. The text also explains that
should also befriend the people that you help, because we used to be like them.
2.)
DEUTERONOMY 24:19-22
-
When you reap the harvest in your field and
overlook a sheaf in the field, do not turn back to get it; it shall go to the
stranger, the orphan, and the widow -- in order that Adonai your God may bless
you in all your undertakings. When you beat down the fruit of your olive trees,
do not go over them again; that shall go to the stranger, the orphan, and the
widow. When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not pick it over again;
that shall go to the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. Always remember that
you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore do I enjoin you to observe this
commandment.
This text explains that when
you go out and collect stuff from your field and leave something behind, do not
go back and get it. You should leave it for the people in poverty, Orphan
or/and Widow to pick it up because they have less than you. You have to do this
inorder for God to bless you. Whenever you gather olives from your olive trees
or grapes from your vineyard, you should leave some for the Orphan, People in
poverty, and Poor. Finally, you should always remember that you were a slave in
Egypt, and that’s why you should observe this.
3.)
DEUTERONOMY 15:12-18
-
If a fellow Hebrew, man or woman, is sold to you, s/he shall
serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall set him/her free. When
you set him/her free, do not let her/him go empty-handed: Furnish her/him out
of the flock, threshing floor, and vat, with which Adonai your God has blessed
you. Bear in mind that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and Adonai your God
redeemed you; therefore I enjoin this commandment upon you today.
But should he say to you, "I do not want to
leave you" --for he loves your household and is happy with you -- you
shall take an awl and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall become
your slave in perpetuity. Do the same with your female slave. When you do set
him free, do not feel aggrieved; for in the six years he has given you double
the service of a hired slave. Moreover, Adonai your God will bless you in all
you do.
if a
Hebrew man or woman is sold to you, they shall serve you for 6 years, and then
in the 7th year you have to set them free. But, when you set them
free you must not leave them empty handed. You should do this because of when
you were slaves in the land of Egypt and God redeemed you. If he/she does not
want to leave you, you shall make him your slave forever. But when you do set
him free, you should not feel aggrieved.
It’s pretty different
from the past. Before we had no Orphanages but now we do (Even though some are
bad), and Widows can support themselves. Most of it didn’t surprise me, except
to when it said that if a slave doesn’t want to leave you, you must let him
stay with you. It is very interesting to know because it shows how kind
Jewish/Israeli people can be. I would look differently to Judaism, because we
act so kind toward Orphans, people in poverty, and Widows.

Ancient Rome Blog
During the time of Ancient Rome, Romans based much of their
society on the expotation of slavory. Their economic systems have become very
dependent on the widespread of existed labor. Most of the slaves in Rome were
in poverty, since they did not own a house, and were forced to work for Roman
Kings. Slaves were an essential to Rome and without them Rome wouldn't be as
strong as they were back then. Most of the complications Rome solved.
Most Slaves in Rome worked in mines and in the Empire's
many farms and potteries, and most public work were completed by Slaves as
well. The government’s state bureaucracy depended very much on educated slaves
to keep the empire running. Some educated slaves also kept most of the private
industries going by being their accountants. There were literate slaves who
were teachers, artists, and entertainers.
In later centuries of the Roman Empire, slavery began to
decrease in importance. This was because Christianity demanded to be more generous.
As well as the occurring the supply of slaves began to dwindle from Rome. To
Roman law slaves were regarded as “property”. They were forces to please their
masters, and did not receive protection from their owners.
Now we don’t have slavery,
and we learned that a religion can stop slavery (sort of). It surprised me how
much they treated slaves back then, calling them property, and that they cannot
receive protection from their owners. It didn’t surprise me that they did have
slaves. This is interesting to know because it explains how poorly the
government treated slaves. This concludes my blog post.

Documentary on Poverty affecting Obesity Synopsis
and Analysis
The documentary starts off with the
talking of obesity. They said that since people live in poor towns, that
affects what they eat and how that can affect them. People were explaining how
that their towns are poor; it’s hard to find a super market near them/in their
town. They would have to resort to unhealthy food like McDonalds and such. They
also didn’t get the opportunity to eat healthy because they were either very
stressed or too busy, and since they lived in a poor environment, they didn’t
have enough money in order buy healthy food so they stuck with cheap junk food.
Analysis on Documentary
I learned from that documentary that
a lot of towns are poor and that most of them don’t have what we have. It’s
amazing how people who own many Fast Food companies take advantage of poor
towns and cities. It differs what I learned in Ancient history because poverty
affected food and in Ancient History that wasn’t a problem (I’m pretty sure it
isn’t). I would recommend this Documentary to a friend because it shows how the
environment can change EVERYTHING, such as what type of food would be in that
town and how it can affect people. It also shows how poverty affects many
people and their health.
A
lot of things surprised me, how the government doesn’t even try to help out.
And also it surprised me how the mayor didn’t decide to do anything until the
interview. I felt like they did a good job presenting how they changed the
environment around them with healthy vendors, and fridges. I wish they just
made it a little bit more detailed. This helped me motivate me in contributing
my ideas and energy because it shows how anything could help the poor
especially good/healthy food.

Ancient Greece Blog Post
Ancient Greece Blog Post
The History of Greece started no later back to Stone Age hunters.
Later early farmers came and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean
kings. This was followed by the Dark Ages, where wars occurred and Population
shrank. While the Population was shrinking so was the decline of production of
food. This causes a further decline in the
population and more and more people were dying because of the loss of food and
war.
The Neolithic period lasted from 6800 to 3200 BC. Many people
traveled from domesticated settlements in Near East of Greece because of
overpopulation. The people that went to travel discovered pottery and animal
husbandry in Greece. The Neolithic people were said to be the first farmers and
their lives weren’t has complex and simple. Many people were very creative
pottery designers, especially the ones located from the sites at Sesklo.
The Early Bronze age started around 2800 BC and lasted until 1050
BC. The Bronze Age is mainly known for the invention and introduction to metal
bronze. The settlements of the Early Bronze Age lived on hills or on low
plains, which were close to water. The next Age was called the Mycenaean Age
which started at 600 BC to 1100 BC (I’m skipping to important Ages). This Age
was a period of high cultural achievement.
This culture was based around the cities in Mycenae, Tiryns,
Pylos, Athens, Thebes, Orchomenos, and Folksier. The Mycenaean were bold
traders and maintained contact with other countries from the Mediterranean and
Europe. They were excellent engineers and built outstanding bridges, tombs,
residences and palaces.
The Dark Ages occurred in 1100 to 750 BC. This was the period in
when the Myceneans went through a period of civil war. This caused death and
food decline with the Mycenaeans. Since the food declined, people died of
starvations, and since the war was occurring people died from that aswell.
The Archaic period was from the year 620 to 480 BC. This age is defined by the development of art
at this time, specifically through pottery and sculptures. The Next Age, or to
be more specific period, is the Classical period. This was the period of the
death of the Macodonian king and Alexander the Great in 323 BC. This was also
the period that Athens reached its greatest political and cultural heights. The
Final Period was called the Hellenistic Period from 336 to 146 BC. This was the
period in which the conquest of the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great as
well as the establishment of Roman supremacy.
Society has changed a lot from this time, especially during the
Dark Age. We sort of still have a Dark Age but it has more to do with food then
with war. It surprised me on how Greece may have been the first people to
invent pottery. It didn’t shock me that they had a Dark age, because almost every
society has a Dark Age. Well I would look at Greece as the one Country that had
a very successful conqueror/King and that they invented pottery.
