Jewish Perspective Essay

1        1.)DEUTERONOMY 10:18-19
-             [God] upholds the cause of the orphan and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing him/her with food and clothing. -- You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

This Text means that you should always try to help strangers/the people in poverty. It also means that you should go out of your way to give them food and clothes. This mostly goes toward Widows and Orphans because they had no one to depend to, and they all needed help in one way or another. The text also explains that should also befriend the people that you help, because we used to be like them.

2.) DEUTERONOMY 24:19-22

-         When you reap the harvest in your field and overlook a sheaf in the field, do not turn back to get it; it shall go to the stranger, the orphan, and the widow -- in order that Adonai your God may bless you in all your undertakings. When you beat down the fruit of your olive trees, do not go over them again; that shall go to the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not pick it over again; that shall go to the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. Always remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore do I enjoin you to observe this commandment.

This text explains that when you go out and collect stuff from your field and leave something behind, do not go back and get it. You should leave it for the people in poverty, Orphan or/and Widow to pick it up because they have less than you. You have to do this inorder for God to bless you. Whenever you gather olives from your olive trees or grapes from your vineyard, you should leave some for the Orphan, People in poverty, and Poor. Finally, you should always remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and that’s why you should observe this.

3.) DEUTERONOMY 15:12-18

-         If a fellow Hebrew, man or woman, is sold to you, s/he shall serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall set him/her free. When you set him/her free, do not let her/him go empty-handed: Furnish her/him out of the flock, threshing floor, and vat, with which Adonai your God has blessed you. Bear in mind that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and Adonai your God redeemed you; therefore I enjoin this commandment upon you today.
But should he say to you, "I do not want to leave you" --for he loves your household and is happy with you -- you shall take an awl and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall become your slave in perpetuity. Do the same with your female slave. When you do set him free, do not feel aggrieved; for in the six years he has given you double the service of a hired slave. Moreover, Adonai your God will bless you in all you do.

if a Hebrew man or woman is sold to you, they shall serve you for 6 years, and then in the 7th year you have to set them free. But, when you set them free you must not leave them empty handed. You should do this because of when you were slaves in the land of Egypt and God redeemed you. If he/she does not want to leave you, you shall make him your slave forever. But when you do set him free, you should not feel aggrieved.

It’s pretty different from the past. Before we had no Orphanages but now we do (Even though some are bad), and Widows can support themselves. Most of it didn’t surprise me, except to when it said that if a slave doesn’t want to leave you, you must let him stay with you. It is very interesting to know because it shows how kind Jewish/Israeli people can be. I would look differently to Judaism, because we act so kind toward Orphans, people in poverty, and Widows.
